Summertime epilogue
Summertime is over. Well, at least it is here in my blog. This was a fun experiment of posting a real sketch - warts and all - each day, of improvising, of throwing a whole lot of shit against the wall in order to see which one would stick. A special extra thanks to Mike Haseloff for helping out with the posting.
And don't despair, there'll be new regular pretty pictures coming up real soon. Keep tuned!

THE KIRBY MARTIN INQUEST #1

Fianlly, it's here! The Kirby Martin Inquest #1
For one long summer a city feared a man whose penchant for silent entry by cover of night earned him the tabloid handle of -- "The Black Ghost." He killed many, before he was finally brought to justice by a vigilante who presented himself as the man's opposite -- The White Ghost.
What began as an act of desperation becomes a way of life for Charles Scott. Having made the acquaintance of an undercover operative during his pursuit of the killer. Scott becomes entangled in the mystery of his disappearance.
As White Ghost he continues a search for answers that may or may not be black and white.
In this character driven story from Nite Lite Theatre, the initial players in this mystery begin to reveal themselves, layered through the unique character driven perspective of Charles Scott.

Quote of the Day
"I understand why young people want to become comics artists and writers. It is to be loved. And that isn't a bad thing. But also make sure you set the goals for yourself to create good stories and good art. That way if you are loved by fans, you have taken the proper steps to earn that love. If you are not loved, you have still done your best work. You can be proud of that as well. Seek the personal satisfaction of doing your best, which is a deep, rich experience money and fame could never buy!"

SELECTED SKETCHES 1992-2002

My sketchbook is finally available for sale!
SELECTED SKETCHES 1992-2002 is a small sample extracted from the numerous sketchbooks I've filled with drawings in the years when I was to college and the first couple of years after I'd finished it.
Covering a wide array of styles, moods, techniques and subject matters, this is also an experiment on the wild frontier of p.o.d. and self-publishing - so far, I've been pleasantly surprised with how good it turned out in terms of the printing quality. Hopefully SELECTED SKETCHES 1992-2002 represents the first of many similar ventures.
You can preview it at http://www.lulu.com/browse/preview.php?fCID=926356
and if you are interested you can buy it at http://www.lulu.com/content/926356 .

NEWS!!!
Well, it's been awhile... I've been incredibly busy with my current schedule as a teacher, which leaves little to no time for the finer things of life like comics and blogs ;-p
Still, not all is gloom and doom. The Kirby Martin Inquest #1 is finally ready to see print. This is a project written by Mike Hasselhoff and drawn by yours truly. It's been a long time coming - far too long - but it looks like it'll soon be in everybody's hands. And the second issue is also about halfway done! Updates soon at www.nitelitetheatre.com
Meanwhile, work continues to slowly progress on my collaboration with Daniel Whiston for Engine comics - Vanguard.
Last but not least, a catalogue of art collected from my personal sketchbooks, Selected Sketches, is being prepared for release this summer. Stay tuned right here for more info as it develops.

MY TOP 3 MUSIC VIDEOCLIPS OF 2006
For the next three days I'll post my three favourite music videoclips for 2006. I'll be the first to admit that I'm no longer as "in" the current pop/rock whatever you want to call it mainstream (?) music scene as I used to be a few years ago. My contact with what that creative world has to offer is maintained mostly through whatever radio station I happen to pick while driving and to random videoclips I stumble upon on tv or youtube. Still, I grew up watching music videoclips and find that "medium" - if it can be called so - just as interesting as the comics. The combination of film and music makes for some very compelling, emotional and, sometimes, inspirational audiovisual experience.
Finally, a warning : this is an entirely subjective selection based specifically on the videoclips I happenned to see in 2006. By picking these I am not particularly endorsing the bands, artists or albums involved. What I'm selecting here are specifically the videoclips for what they are - I'm no longer "hip" enough to care about band-cults or being a "fan".

Scarlet Traces
As those familiar with my posts should know by now, I have a bit of an obsession with lists. I suppose it's something that evolved when I was a kid collecting comics and trying to keep track of the continuity of my favorite magazines and characters. My mind sometimes drifts into some sort of common denominator under which I try to put whatever things I like that happen to fall into that umbrella's territory. For instances, I've often come to the conclusion that one of my favorite type of creators is what I'd call "world-builders". Now, to a certain degree, every writer, director or cartoonist is a world-builder, but there are certain artists who pay particular attention to the "world" in which their stories take place... to the point where the "world" becomes as important as the characters. In these group of creators, I'd include people with works as different as Tolkien, E.P. Jacobs, Hayao Myiazaki or Matt Groening. It isn't that I don't find these artists good at character development or storytelling - they obviously are - but what I really find brilliant in their works is the apparent care and attention in the worlds they create.

Nowadays, this tends to be the most charming element I find in creative works, be it comics, movies or literature. So, it's no wonder that when I incidentally came across Scarlet Traces : The Great Game I went ga-ga. Writen by Ian Edington and illustrated by D'Israeli, this four-issue mini-series published by Dark Horse is a delight to the eyes. If you made sense of my mad scriblings in the previous paragraphs, have a fondness for "parallel worlds" rendered with an eye for detail and verisimilitude and, last but not least, are interested in buying a comic this Christmas try tracking this down and get it while it lasts. You won't be disappointed.
